What does an IP lookup tell you?
An IP lookup resolves a public IPv4 or IPv6 address to the network it belongs to — its ISP or hosting provider, the ASN (Autonomous System Number) that announces it, and an approximate geographic location (country and city) based on regional registry data.
IPv4 vs. IPv6
IPv4 addresses (like 203.0.113.42) are the older, more limited format — the internet
is slowly running out of them. IPv6 addresses (like 2001:db8::1) are the newer, much
larger address space designed to replace it. This tool looks up either format.
Why the location is approximate
IP geolocation reflects where an address block is registered, not the exact physical location of the device using it — accuracy is usually reliable at the country level, less so for city. VPNs, proxies, and mobile carrier networks can shift the apparent location further.
